Searching for Santa.
Earlier this year Moorlands Human Capital were asked to visit a very important client in Lapland. So, we packed our travel bag with laptop in tow and off we went. Past the Reindeer barn and elf houses, we approached a snowy grotto. A flustered Christmas chairman answered the door.
With only 180 days left until the big day Santa had resigned! After years of service the Christmas CEO (Christmas Experience Officer) wanted to finally put his feet up. A beach bar in Spain and endless sherry cocktails with Mrs Clause were on the horizon.
The client needed us to find his replacement, and Christmas relied on us. Talk about pressure. As with all search assignments we needed a good person specification.
So, what makes a good Santa?
- Good elf management
- Sleigh driving licence
- Ability to control temperamental Reindeers
- A taste for mince pies and sherry
- Qualifications in elf and safety
- Ability to deliver to one very tight deadline
- Bilingual – working across all continents
- Having a calming influence on some very excited clients
With person specification in hand we went to work. We had to draw up a naughty and nice list. Only those on the nice list could be considered for this important role. We searched the globe, high and low, far and wide. After a rigorous interview process, we narrowed our Santa search to one. We had to test his credentials firstly. We put him in the middle of a shopping centre and charged £3 a visit to see the big man. 200 visits later, a belly fully of mince pies and reams of Christmas wish lists later, he had past the psychometric assessment with flying colours.
He discussed terms with the client. Luckily, he had no restrictive notice ‘clause’ in his previous contract and was free to leave. He was more than happy to be paid in Turkey sandwiches and Quality Street chocolates. The 5% pension contributions and lucrative bonus scheme were just an extra gift for this happy Santa. The flexible working hours suited him perfectly, and his relocation package to Lapland was sealed. We had found our new Santa. He is that good that we at Moorlands Human Capital don’t think you will notice any difference, in fact due to our meticulous search process we think he will be even better this year.
